One of the most important credibility building things you can do as a business buyer (especially if you are a first-time buyer) is to establish a website that tells who you are and what types of businesses you want to buy.

Having your own web site for your business acquisitions search is optional, but here is why I highly recommend it if you do not have one. They are powerful tools. A website can help someone new to business present themselves in a professional, credible and businesslike manner.

What should the website have on it?

Main/Frontpage - that describes a little about who you are

Acquisition/Investment Criteria page - explains exactly what you are looking for (which shows you have focus and are not a "tire-kicker" or someone who is unsure about what they are doing).

Business Owner FAQ page - answers to frequently asked questions of business buyers by business owners.

Contact page  - a page that tells the best way to get in touch with you to decision your acquisition interests and possible deals for you.

Here is what having your own web site can do for you:

  • It will work for you 24/7 – Business owners that you contact regarding interest in their business and professionals that you may contact while conducting your acquisition search can visit your web site and see who you are and more about you.
  • Even when you’re not available to talk with them … you can direct them to your site to answer some of their questions.  A properly designed website works for you when you are unavailable or busy with other things.
  • It enables you to use a professional business email address. Use of a business e-mail account, such as This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Countless times I have had business owners, customers and clients tell me, “I checked out your website and was impressed with it; it showed me you were for real.  That is why I decided to contact you or respond to your email/call”.

A website allows you to reach farther than you can solely through your direct efforts. You can direct people to your site to see more about your acquisition or investment criteria and also over time people will find your site and contact you; people, professionals and prospective sellers that never would have reached you otherwise.

People can bookmark your website and come back to it for further consideration in contacting you. The uses of your website as a communication and presentation tool are too numerous for me to outline here.

Remember: As a business buyer/investor not every deal you work on is going to close; but by focusing on quality and operating as a prepared professional, you can increase the odds in your favor. Having a good looking, professional website helps you establish your professionalism and goes a long way towards establishing credibility.
