Like I touched on in my Friday article "Not a pretty picture--its not worth 1,000 words either"; its important to prepare yourself so that you have some irons in the fire or have expanded your knowledge and skills so that you can get those things in work that can help you become more financially self-sufficient.
In reaching for information to help you with that, some of you will grab what is basically a "get rich quick" opportunity. Over a 26+ year business career ... I have never found such a thing (a way to get rich quick). From my experience they don't exist. There are lots of good solid income opportunities out there, in services you can provide, businesses to start, and in ways to help you buy a business of your own. But all take work and preparation; just like any real business requires.
While I don't believe in get rich quick ... I do believe it is possible to gain valuable knowledge that will help you develop other sources of income and start or buy a business. I call that "get smart quick". And by quick, I have to say that how "quick" will be determined by your own pace and desire to absorb, understand and apply what you are studying and learning. As Andrew Carnegie said: "You can't push anyone up the ladder of success". You have to want it. You have to be willing to study and work to learn the necessary skills. You can short-cut things somewhat by "buying knowledge" (through books and courses) but its still on you to perform.
Below are some books and educational materials that I own, have learned from and have used as the basis to help me start, build and buy my own businesses. They lay the groundwork for several basic things you need to know and understand about business so that you can apply them to the business that you want to start or buy.
They are all available for order at Amazon.com and are not that expensive. You may want to think about adding them to your library of business books as well.
Side note: If you have a specific business you want to learn more about starting or buying; email me and tell me about it and I will see if I can give you some feedback on that type of business or direct you to some resource information to help you.
