Don’t be like the person in this poem that Napoleon Hill included in the original edition of Think and Grow Rich:

"I bargained with Life for a penny,
And Life would pay no more,
However I begged at evening
When I counted my scanty store.
For Life is a just employer,
He gives you what you ask,
But once you have set the wages,
Why, you must bear the task.
I worked for a menial’s hire,
Only to learn, dismayed,
That any wage I had asked of Life,
Life would have willingly paid.”

In life and business, I have come to realize one very powerful concept:

When the time comes to choose an opportunity and direction to go in with your career or business plans go for the one that has the largest numbers attached to it.

Let me explain some things first before getting into that. There are fewer things worse, for a business owner, than to be in a low margin low volume or high volume, no margin business, and fewer things worse for an employee than working in a job where the pay is low and the hours are long.

And there is no light at the end of the tunnel.  That sucks.  All the way round.

Sometimes you are in such a rut it is hard to see a way out of it.  You may be in debt up to your eyeballs, maybe you are scared about change and don’t know what you can do.  Maybe it’s a combination of both that freeze you and you can’t break loose.  It’s like having a tiger by the tail that you can’t let go of ("there’s teeth in the other end!").

So it goes on and on with you just hanging in there.

What if you happen to be fortunate enough to not be locked into one of the situations described above?  Yet you want to make a change or do something different?

What often happens?

It is a very sad thing, and I hate to say this but … often the fortunate one's choose to buy or start a business that is a low margin low volume or high volume, no margin business or one that consumes them with no time for anything but the business.  Or they may go the employee route again … they choose to work for another company.  They weren't happy with the old company and perhaps may discover they are not happy with the new one either.

The grass ‘is not’ always greener on the other side of the fence.

And there is no light at the end of the tunnel for them.  That sucks.  All the way round.

Is there a solution if you have the tiger by the tail and are currently buried in one of the situations described above or perhaps though fortunate, are faced with a choice of what opportunity to look for or direction to go in and don’t want to make the wrong choice?

I have been someone holding that tiger and been in both situations as a business owner and someone’s employee.  It sucked.  All the way round.  But I did find a solution, and I believe that there are solutions for you too.

The solution is knowledge.  Specifically, when it comes to starting or buying a business, specialized knowledge on what type of business to start or buy and what kind to avoid.

People who have successful high-income businesses usually applied specialized skills and/or specialized knowledge when they determined the type of business they wanted.  They took their knowledge and understanding of how to work smarter and not harder and applied it to finding the right business for them ... one worth working in.  For a reward much greater than the average person receives in a job working for someone else.

Applying the knowledge you have or gain gives you an opportunity to go out, and find and the right type of business to start or buy.  By picking the right business the rewards for success can be the “large numbers” I mentioned above in this message.

And often your success in this (and many other things in life) will depend on the quality of your efforts … notice I did not say “quantity”.

So when it comes down to questions and considerations for the type of business to start or buy … you can choose to “work for a little” or “work for a lot” … it’s your choice but we think that you should focus on a business that will allow you to “work for a lot”.
